Openings: Open Tuesday to Sunday 1,30am – 18,50pm- On Saturdays and holidays it will be necessary to make the reservation at least one day in advance.

Closed: Mondays, New Year’s Day, May 1st, Christmas Day

Notes: The Royal and Imperial Apartments will remain closed for the time being because it is not possible to guarantee compliance with the rules on social distancing imposed by the Covid-19 emergency.

The Museum of Costume and Fashion remains closed for refurbishment works.

The Pitti Palace was purchased in 1550 and chosen by Cosimo I de’ Medici and his wife Eleanor of Toledo as the new grand ducal residence. It was also the royal palace of other two dynasties: the House of Lorraine-Habsburg (which succeeded the Medici from 1737) and the Kings of Italy of the House of Savoy, who inhabited it from 1865.

Today the Palace is divided into four museums: on the ground floor, the Treasury of the Grand Dukes, on the first floor the Palatine Gallery and the Royal and Imperial Apartments, fourteen magnificent rooms where the Medici and Lorraine grand-ducal families used to live and the Modern Art Gallery and the Museum of Costume and Fashion on the second floor.

The Palatine Gallery and Royal and Imperial Apartments they have within them an impressive selection of masterpieces. which include important collection, including which includes the largest concentration of paintings by Raphael in the world as well as invaluable works by Titian,, Caravaggio, Rubens, Pietro da Cortona and other Italian and European masters of the Renaissance and Baroque periods. There are many rooms and galleries full of marvellous paintings and the paintings in their lavish frames entirely cover the walls of the rooms which are enriched by sculptures, vases and tables with semi-precious stone. In the “Planet Rooms ”, there are the sensational series of frescoes by Pietro da Cortona for Grand Duke of Tuscany Ferdinando II de’ Medici and every work of art is enhanced by the setting and the furnishings.

Masterpieces

The Museum features a significant collection of masterpieces by Raffaello, and many Venetian works by Tiziano. It also includes the main Italian and European artists of the 16th and 17th centuries, such as Andrea del Sarto, Rosso Fiorentino, Pontormo, Bronzino, Tintoretto, Veronese, Caravaggio, Rubens, Van Dyck, Murillo and Ribera.
