This museum occupies most of Palazzo Barberini’s first floor and displays works of art by great Italian and foreign painters from the thirteenth to the eighteenth centuries including Raffaello and Caravaggio.
The collection boasts many masterpieces, particularly from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
The fifteenth century is only represented in a piecemeal fashion, though a highlight is Filippo Lippi’s painting Madonna and Child Enthroned, dated 1437, on loan from Corneto Tarquinia.
The sixteenth-century collection is more extensive and among its more important portraits is Raffaello’s famous La Fornarina, as well as paintings by Andrea del Sarto, Beccafumi, Sodoma, Bronzino and works of art by Lotto, Tintoretto, Titian and El Greco, spanning work by Bologna artists and ending at the end of the century with Caravaggio’s splendid Judith Beheading Holofernes and the great 1600s with work by Reni, Domenichino, Guercino, Lanfranco, Bernini, Poussin, Pietro da Cortona, Gaulli and Maratta.
Eighteenth-century painting is also well represented. The exhibition is arranged by schools, offering a complete overview of Italian art of that time, of consistently high quality, with a rare collection of French eighteenth-century paintings as well. .
