Castel Sant'Angelo National Museum bears the signs of the many alternating purposes it has served and can be considered a monument, an archaeological site and a museum all in one. This last purpose was determined by the diverse collections that found their way here at different times in history.

Castel Sant'Angelo National Museum has been extended with a new exhibition space of enormous interest, dedicated to the castle’s history.

In the Alexander VI wing, recently restored and an integral part of a redevelopment and restoration project being carried out on the museum, the exhibition features a series of etchings, prints, paintings and plans that recreate and illustrate the many different – often misunderstood – historical periods that have modified, affected and changed the monument over its thousand-year history.

Repertory

Divided into four sections, Castel Sant'Angelo’s history is illustrated using historical prints, scenic views and interesting idealised reconstructions of this monument as inspired by the imagination of Renaissance artists and architects from its construction right up to the 1800s, following an itinerary that highlights its intense and continuous use.
